Posted on May 18, 2025 | By Ms. Lorraine, Art & Design Teacher

On May 17, 2025,our student took part in an inspirational educational art excursion to a professional art gallery in Nyali, Mombasa,Kenya. This hands-on art learning experience was designed to expand classroom teaching by immersing students in the real world of professional art.

Why This Art Gallery Visit Mattered

This excursion was part of our mission to make art education practical, engaging, and relevant. The goals of the visit were to:

  • Reinforce art and design concepts taught in class with real-world applications.

  • Encourage students to connect their creative skills to professional artistic practices.

  • Inspire creativity in young learners and validate their interest in the arts.

  • Motivate students who may be uncertain about the value of art education.

  • Build student confidence, collaboration, and trust in the learning process.

These objectives were achieved through an engaging, thoughtfully curated day of exploration and artistic expression.

  • ART GALLERY ACTIVITIES

From the moment students arrived at the art gallery, learning came alive.

1. Outdoor Sculpture Tour:Students began with an exploration of outdoor sculptures by a local professional artist. They discussed materials, techniques, textures, and artistic intention—actively connecting the artwork to what they had previously learned in school.

2. Guided Gallery Walkthrough:Inside, the gallery experience deepened. With guidance, students engaged with paintings and mixed-media pieces, identifying familiar elements of art and design such as line, color, texture, and composition. They practiced visual analysis, enhancing their understanding of professional techniques

3. Creative Art Workshop:In the highlight of the day, students took part in a group workshop where they created original artworks inspired by the Big Five animals of Kenya, using a chosen element of art (such as shape, form, or contrast). The session was not only creative but also therapeutic, encouraging artistic self-expression and teamwork. One group’s artwork stood out so much it was nearly selected for display by the gallery—a true honor for the young artists!

4. Group Critique and Reflection:The day ended with a group critique session, where students discussed their artwork, shared insights, and reflected on their experience—building confidence, public speaking skills, and appreciation for different styles and perspectives.
